Perplexity is the least “similar to GPT” tool on this site — on purpose. It looks like a chatbot but behaves like a search engine that explains itself: every answer is stitched to numbered citations you can click and check. If your ChatGPT use is mostly “find out, compare, verify”, Perplexity is arguably the better tool for that slice. If your use is writing, coding or thinking out loud, it is a complement, not a replacement — and its free tier is counted in searches per day, not messages.

The real difference
Perplexity’s defining feature is that claims come with receipts: numbered sources under every answer, drawn from a live web crawl. The asking. Plain-language questions, follow-ups that refine, threads you return to — identical muscle memory. ChatGPT Projects map loosely to Spaces, and uploading a PDF to interrogate works the same way (40 MB per file on free, kept 30 days). What changes is the output: shorter, denser answers built around sources rather than conversational prose.
Perplexity is not where you draft the report, brainstorm names for an hour, or build a custom bot. Long-form writing quality trails Claude and ChatGPT; there is no Custom-GPT-style ecosystem; voice and images are afterthoughts. And because third-party models run through Perplexity’s pipeline, you get them applied to search — not the full native feature set you would get going to each vendor directly.
Give it the three questions you would normally google and then verify by hand: a health claim you half-believe, a two-product comparison before a purchase, and something that happened this week. Click the citations and check they actually support the sentences — that habit is the whole skill of using Perplexity well. If you catch yourself trusting-but-verifying faster than your old search routine, it has earned a tab.
The honest part
Ask it for a delicate email or a 2,000-word draft and you get something serviceable and flat. That is the trade of a retrieval-first product: it compresses sources well and composes prose adequately. Most Perplexity devotees still keep ChatGPT or Claude open for actual writing.
Three Pro Searches a day is one real research question. The unlimited quick searches soften this, but anyone drawn to Perplexity is by definition research-heavy, and research-heavy free users hit the ceiling daily — which is of course the design: the free tier is a demo of Pro, not a workspace.
The links make errors catchable, not absent. Perplexity can mis-summarise a source, cite a weak page confidently, or blend two claims into one wrong sentence. Treat every load-bearing answer as a lead to check — the product’s own design invites exactly that, so use it.
