Is Gemini similar to ChatGPT?

Gemini is the alternative you may already be using without deciding to — it sits inside Gmail, Docs, Drive, Android and Search. As a chat assistant it is the most ChatGPT-like surface here: multimodal, image generation on the free tier, deep research, custom bots. The two real differences are underneath: Gemini can see your Google life when you let it, and it meters usage the way Claude does — a five-hour refresh plus a weekly cap — where ChatGPT’s everyday text has been unlimited on every plan since August 2026.

The honest reason to pick Gemini is not benchmark scores, it is that it can summarise the email thread you are dreading, draft a reply in Gmail, pull figures out of a Sheet and answer questions about your own Drive — from inside those apps. ChatGPT connects to external services through connectors; Gemini simply lives in Google’s, and on Android it replaces the assistant on your phone. If your work runs on Workspace, that integration outweighs most model differences.

Context that swallows whole projects

Gemini’s long-context story is concrete: about 32k tokens of context on the free tier, around 128k on mid plans, and up to 1 million tokens at the top. A million tokens is a full codebase, several books or years of records in one conversation — work that otherwise needs chunking and summarising. ChatGPT handles big files well (up to 2M tokens per uploaded file), but Gemini’s top-plan working context is the headline number in this comparison.

Its limits look like Claude’s, not ChatGPT’s

Gemini allowances refresh on a five-hour cycle with a weekly ceiling on top, and paid plans multiply the allowance — roughly 2×, 4× and 5–20× depending on tier — rather than removing it. Google also publishes few absolute numbers, so what a multiplier buys you in messages is opaque. Coming from 2026 ChatGPT, where plain text chat never runs out, that is the adjustment to expect on heavy days.

What transfers in five minutes

Nearly everything about how you already work: prompting style, uploads, voice, a deep-research mode, custom bots (Gems instead of Custom GPTs, and rebuilding one is mostly pasting the same instructions). If you sign in with the Google account you actually use, Gemini starts ahead of where ChatGPT ever was, because your mail, files and calendar are already there for it to draw on once you grant access.

What you will actually miss

The unlimited-text luxury, first: Gemini’s free tier and even paid multipliers can run dry on a heavy day, where 2026 ChatGPT text simply doesn’t. Beyond that, the Custom GPT store’s sheer breadth, some third-party integrations, and predictability — Google publishes fewer hard numbers about limits than OpenAI or Anthropic, and renames its plans often enough that reviews go stale fast.

How to test it in one afternoon

Test the moat, not the chat: ask it to summarise a real email thread and draft the reply; ask a question whose answer is buried in your own Drive; drop in the largest PDF you own. Then generate the images you would normally spend ChatGPT credits on. If none of that lands — if you would use Gemini only as a plain chatbot — ChatGPT’s unlimited free text is the stronger plain-chatbot deal.

Opaque, Claude-style limits

A five-hour refresh with a weekly cap is workable; a five-hour refresh with almost no published numbers is frustrating. You discover your real allowance by hitting it mid-task, and “2× more usage” is unverifiable marketing when the baseline is unstated. ChatGPT’s published caps and unlimited text are simply easier to plan around.

Plan churn and naming fog

Google’s AI subscriptions have been renamed and repackaged repeatedly, and tiers differ by country. The prices in our table were checked on the date shown, but treat any Gemini plan article — ours included — as provisional and confirm what your checkout page actually says before paying.

The integration is the privacy trade

Gemini’s superpower is reading your mail, files and location context — which is precisely the data you are handing over. Controls and admin policies exist and Workspace data has contractual protections, but if you would not paste a document into a chatbot, the same judgement applies to connecting the account that holds all your documents.
